32 > 60 (dotcom boom) > 72 > 40 (dotcom bust) > 52 > 135 (moved to NYC, freelance) > 7 (started my own agency) > 20 (agency started to make some $) > 70 (back to freelance) > 95 (worked at small agency) > 85 (step down salary but better company) > 150 (learnings from that last place paid off) Good question!
@Strategist 1
I finally decided to take the negotiation process head on. Read a ton of articles in WSJ, Fortune, etc. and sought counsel from a dozen people in and out of the industry to make a plan and develop strategy. Was able to negotiate 3 separate offers against each other to drive up the base salary. Finally feel like I'm being compensated fairly for the first time in my career.

@Copywriter 1. No I don't think that's normal for Chicago. I'm definitely under paid.

@Senior Account Executive 2 - The value of money is relative, of course, as naturally the same salary in NYC and say Salt Lake City will last differently, same applies in the UK to London vs. Let's say Manchester. But look at the progression and starting salary differences though. When in the UK my first raise amounted to an additional lunch out once a month after more than a year of doing an excellent job in the agency, it felt like a big 🖕🏼. Have a look at the above, the only UK answers started with £15.5-18, which equates to £18-£21. Imagine living on that in a big city, when more than half of your wage goes for rent and commute...
35-40-50-60-70-80-135(new job) - 9 years - NYC
Was actually given a raise to 100 at the old job as I was waiting on the background check from the new one, never collected it once.
