I applaud your aggressiveness (I'm aggressive as well).
One key thing that I'd like to mention. NEVER EVER EVER quote your expectations on the very first call. Always keep it vague, like as per industry standards, or something like 'i haven't thought about it yet, and CTC depends on lot of factors, so can't quote any figure'. If you can, try getting some sense of their budget.
That said, 23 to 40 could be tricky. So it always better to get decent hike on the first offer and then go offer shopping. It ALWAYS work.
Why aim for a meagre 40lpa.. aim for 40cr at the least.. HR is not responding because you're quoting too less!

The jibes are not useless. You took the cream of the salary stats and presented it as a lowball number amongst a junta that is lamenting lower pay. So you'll get your share of brickbats.

I found it best as I jumped from 4 to 14 but these days people getting more.
