I'm already doing exam corrections for half credit, and am very flexible with most due dates.
This stuff scaffolds too much to skip topics.
I let everyone fix homework and quizzes as many times as they want for the entire unit.
I also give everyone three free homework passes they can use on any homework assignment. It’s 100%, no questions asked, and applies no matter how late the assignment. They’re still responsible for learning the material, but they’re off the hook for the homework. The intent is to provide a safety net for students who get overwhelmed or who miss large chunks of school and need to *feel* caught up. If they don’t use the passes, each one that remains at the end of a semester turns into a full extra credit assignment.
We also have LOTS of math class options, many of which are built for struggling students with gaps. We go through every student we have at the end of a semester as a math department and recommend their next math placement. It takes forever, but it hopefully gives struggling students a shot.
Our guidance department was not always one for listening either. It took a lot of years of badgering from our department head, a change in counselors, and a change in admin before our recommendations became placements instead of ignored suggestions.
I can't imagine having students in an obviously optional math class that have those difficulties, but sometimes in a trying class I grade students on attendance and effort only. They have to be in class, they have to attempt all the work, and they can't earn higher than a C. I figure sometimes the most important lesses is to persevere, and if they attempt all the problems, something will rub off. May not work in a high level class, but for the first quarter of algebra it can get them on board.
I am on board with you. My calculus students are having trouble solving linear equations, graphing parent functions, and factoring.
I have had many discussions with them about how math classes in college will not include hand holding. During a lesson, if the examples I model for them include prior skills that they struggle with, I offer extra help and provide video links but explain that precalculus was a prerequisite course for a reason and they will need to either stay after for help or refresh their memory themselves.
I have started offering full credit for late assignments as well this year, but only up until the day off the unit assessment. I will either give students the opportunity to provide written explanations for each step of the problem solving process for each problem on the assignment or provide the student with an alternative assignment since it's still important for students to get the individualized practice on the skills that are being assessed.
