Who has left law for something drastically different? After nearly 25 years as a litigator…I’m secretly taking classes to get my EMT cert and starting the path to become a firefighter. If all goes well I’ll be making nearly $200K less a year and hopefully much happier! Nobody knows except my family for now. It’s a long shot at my age but life is short. So…who else has done something crazy and left law?

Not there yet but just wanted to say I respect the heck out of this. The golden handcuffs are real and breaking them to pursue a dream is objectively difficult and inspiring. I personally dream about pulling back in a couple of years and becoming a part time vet tech (also making much less)

That’s awesome! I went through some serious medical stuff with my dog last year, and seeing the vets help me / him in tough moments really made an impact in a way I didn’t expect. I think you’ve hit the nail on the head about burnout — when you’re personally invested and you’re exercising agency, it’s amazing how much better you feel.

Reading this makes me feel encouraged to start a new path, though not guaranteed to be as lucrative so soon. I’m potentially leaving my much shorter litigation career to start working in entertainment at Warner Brothers. The position is non legal but I’d be handling contracts for actors and shows and could potentially lead to one of the in house legal teams if I take advantage of the mentor who is taking me on and make good connections. I’m scared to leave the courtroom and my salary to start over but feel as though I’d regret passing on the opportunity when I’m in the weeds of drafting a summary judgment motion or billing away on the weekends missing time with my almost 4 month old baby.

Wish I could see into the future and be sure I make the right choice 😅

What are some good practices during the sales phase of a potential project to execute before the contract is signed? Seems obvious but would love some ideas on standard operating procedures that help with seamlessly handing over a signed contract to the account team. For example, speaking to the potential client explicitly about their role in staying on schedule, reviewing scope creep consequences, etc.

Looking for advice…I currently make $85k + 35% bonus. I’m interviewing for a job that I now know pays $70k + 15% bonus. Obviously that’s a steep cut. The only reasons I’m still interested are that it’s in crypto operations which I’d like to transition to, and it’s back on the east coast closer to family. We want our daughter growing up with them around. Any thoughts on negotiating a higher salary? Or, any experiences on taking a pay cut and what went into your decision to do so? Thanks!

Additional Posts in Law Exit Opportunities

I work with great people. Really can’t say anything bad about my firm in general either. But…I still dislike the entire premise of law firm life, the billable hour, etc.. I’d love to work in a law school setting as a counselor or something but I can’t afford the pay cut. *sigh* Does anyone feel like being a lawyer is just doing homework all day? First world problems I suppose. I’m very thankful to have a job ❤️

I’m so miserable every day is painful. I want to go tell pre-law school me it’s not worth the debt because you will hate this career and then feel trapped by the debt. I’ve been practicing in both big law (many yrs ago) and now in-house for over 10 years. Quite often I struggle because I don’t find work fulfilling. I’ve been in industries that allegedly have greater cause (healthcare) but was eventually disappointed by the corporate bureaucracy and went to a cutting-edge tech company for intellectual stimulation. Still I struggle. Should I try public interest? Not that I don’t need the money but it’s hard to work when I am so detached and find it meaningless
