Because most Florida clients aren’t prepared to pay big law rates.
Agree with A1. Also, COL in most of Florida has historically been better than in many other states. Couple that with no state income tax, and pay scales have lagged. They’re starting to catch up as COL has risen drastically in recent years, but these things take time. In Tampa, most firms have raised their salaries at least once with cost of living adjustments in the past couple of years. And many have made multiple bumps.
Firms in Orlando have made some movement in recent years, but the better midsize firms are still starting associates at “only” $130k or so.
Again, that’s in part because they can’t bill at the rates that Foley ($215k), Baker ($200k) and H&K ($205?) can bill at because they don’t have work from other offices in HCOL areas.
All of which makes me think it’s only a matter of time before the local firms (Winderwwedle, Lowndes) dwindle to boutiques and the regional firms (GrayRobinson, Stearns Weaver) are forced to make the push to get bigger or suffer the same fate as the local firms but over a longer time line.
