Why do people dislike being on camera for meetings? For me, video at least gets closer to in-person interaction (you get body language, facial expressions, etc), whereas all Slack and voice-only calls just exacerbate the interpersonal challenges of remote work.

It takes away the comfort of being at home. Feels like an invasion.

Bc I usually look like a train wreck 🙃

Because I dont want to waste time getting camera presentable and it kills my wifi speed

You would thank me for not turning on my cam

Some people are doing other things

That’s fair. At least for meetings where you’re not participating.

When I'm in an in-person meeting I pay attention to the body language and facial expressions of others. When I'm in a video meeting and my camera is on, I stare at myself and get very distracted and drained worried about my own facial expression and general appearance. Very inefficient use of my energy and focus.

like

Total invasion into my home. Not all us have large enough spaces to make this happen successfully. I also have kids that might pop up. Because we are in a pandemic you don’t have free reign into my home now. Stop being pushy about getting people on video

like

Especially at GH...lemme tell y’all...

I live in a small studio apartment with my significant other and my entire (messy) life would be on display.

like

Because of 3 reasons for me-
1. Video makes multi tasking looks much worse than it is. We all take notes in meetings, but I have to actively look at another area of a screen or paper to take them and it makes you look worse at attention vs. looking across the table over the monitor or whatever.
2. It makes you a lot stiffer, I can’t actually use my full body language because I have to stay in a clear camera profile zone and if I moved a lot it would annoy the hell out of you
3. Everyone’s home setup is dramatically different, I often like to work on the kitchen table with the puppy running around, I look far more unprofessional if I turn video on vs. same level of engagement on a call.

I will add, I’m an auditory person and not a visual one at all. I don’t need to see you, I prefer hearing you.

like

These make a ton of sense. Thanks for the insight!

I like to use the time in calls to strategically multitask. Like workout if it’s a call where I’m only talking occasionally or not at all. Or make a cup of coffee. Sometimes I paint my nails. There’s this weird notion you’re a “bad” person if you’re in a meeting and not sitting perfectly still in an office chair the entire time. It’s outdated and bizarre to think like that. Some of my best meeting contributions have come from when I’m being creative while listening, like cooking something simple or taking a walk while I’m listening and responding. Not for everyone I know, but it works for me. I also tend to find corporate life in general oddly structured and hierarchical and enjoy being a little more offbeat with my work style.

likesmart

I won’t be judged for wearing a hoodie, leggings or having my hair in a messy bun. I can stuff my face with take out, fold laundry and listen to what’s going on at the same time 😌

like

OP and majority of these responses are probably male. I agree with all these reasons for not wanting to be on cam, but also think there’s more of a disadvantage for women - generally speaking, we take longer to get ready primarily due to hair and maybe make up.

While I have stopped using make up and downplay my hairstyle, I still feel this pressure to put more effort thank I think I guy has to in order to look alive/professional 🤣 and so it’s easier to be lazy and not turn on camera!

like

Ha well damn you got me!😅yes yes all those things deter me sadly but try to turn on more than I have it off.

I do my best thinking when I can walk around. Video just gets in the way of me doing my best work. At least in person I could still move around the room....

like

That would be so distracting, to have someone moving around their house on a zoom call.

like

There’s so much prep that goes in for a video call. I have to make my bed, shower, put on clean clothes and a bra, brush my hair and apply some makeup. I just don’t have the energy for all that at 8:30am.

like

Because they have no right to see me, if I don’t want to be seen.

like

Follow up for people worried about appearances: What makes video chats different than superficial judgement that happens in-person? (Honest question, I’m just curious about where the discrepancy comes from)

likesmart

Yes PM1 and G1! Exactly

I’ll disagree. On phone I’m completely disconnected and not listening. It’s too easy to do 1000 other things. On video I can’t be running around the house, doing laundry, cooking dinner, playing with my kid, etc. The best experience with the case I’ve had since Cove it as one where the younger members of the team, including myself, would often login to zoom later in the evenings and just leave it on so that we could hang out as if we were back in the hotel. We got to see everyone’s significant others, dogs, roommates, etc. and you felt like you really got to know people.

like

Because I hurt my back and can’t sit or stand in one position for more than a few minutes. Half the time I’m on my yoga mat stretching!

like

Fair!

I almost always use Zoom with video on, as does most of my company, whether for internal meetings or with clients. It is feeling almost like we have kept the personal connection. I don’t sit and stare at myself, can look at who is speaking. I have heard Zoom is draining, but not so bad from my experience. I like it a lot more than expected. Plus, it forces you to be presentable every day. And as someone said earlier, this is much less visibility than being in person in an office.
