Why do people dislike being on camera for meetings? For me, video at least gets closer to in-person interaction (you get body language, facial expressions, etc), whereas all Slack and voice-only calls just exacerbate the interpersonal challenges of remote work.

I can't believe no one is mentioning the concept of "zoom fatigue"

There is nothing natural about facing a panel of people and all of them are staring at YOU even when you're not speaking or otherwise the focus of attention.

There is nothing natural about seeing coworkers as essentially floating heads without access to other body language.

There is nothing natural about seeing a mirror image of yourself constantly while in a meeting.

There is nothing natural about being seen and seeing others while not being able to make eye contact (something that is extremely important for interpersonal connection).

All of this unnatural phenomena can be EXHAUSTING, even for people who are very social and enjoy connecting with others in a very visual way.

I feel totally drained after group video calls. It impedes the quality of my work. It's not because I hate people or am too lazy to look presentable, quite the opposite.

And if you're reading this and think that I'm overreacting, you might need to work on being able to listen to other people's experiences without passing judgment or projecting your own issues onto them.

Because washing my hair and making it look presentable for a meeting where my face doesn't matter is a pain. I'm all happy to connect, but societal rules dictate that I can't look like a mess.

It’s not just about appearances. Having to sit there and put on a face knowing you are being watched makes the whole “multi-task and complete 15 things in one hour” part of consulting difficult. Especially as most meetings, 2-3 people do all the talking. It’s a lot of pressure for those that can get anxious easily.

like

I agree with all the above reasons, but for me what is the biggest deterrent is wanting to look professional if my camera is on. That concerns my background, trying to type vigorous notes without moving in a way that is noticeable and getting too close to the camera, and the way I look. Clothes and make up can be a quick fix before a call but my natural hair is not considered professional and takes significant time and effort to get it to be professional. I report to a male who always asks why I do not like having my camera on but I am not comfortable sharing that.

Researching the job mkt & pay for nursing: It is so easy to set up a first interview esp. as a nurse. Set up a zoom meeting, in the zoom meeting ask abt job details and ask for the salary range. They will give it to you, and in my case it was the same range for both of the companies. (Hospice oncall nurse here👋). Then you fit in somewhere on that continuum based on education & experience—that where the negotiation comes in—they will make a case to place you as low as possible on the scale.

I got an offer from epam but confused whether it’s epam systems or anywhere.
As I have been given fixed salary and remote work. But on offer it states EPAM systems.
Could someone please let me know who has joined epam anywhere recently if on offer it’s mentioned as anywhere?
On my interview invites as well it was mentioned anywhere.

Help!! My bestfriend is doing two months abroad and was trying to fly into turkey when they told her she couldn't because her passport expired within three months.

She went to the US Embassay in Athens knowing she had a month left of traveling, and gave her an emergency passport and punched holes in her exsisting one. Now no country will let her in with her emergency passport.

Can her mom get her a passport in the US and ship it to her? Is there anyway around this?

Thank you!!

Ex-consultant now in marketing. Used to be an avid follower here and got great insights on companies when trying to exit consulting so thought I’d try here for advice. Outside of FAANG, what are good large CA-based tech companies that provide good pay, WLB, and culture? DD has great people and WLB, but pay is low and you’re not given the tools and resources to succeed + truly make an impact. Google and Apple are ideal but need backups. Like is Salesforce still good? A company along those lines.
