Wanted to highlight Prudential Financial’s hiring practices. They rescinded my offer once I attempted to negotiate the salary. The official reason given was that I didn’t “sound excited enough”.
They then admittedly gave the offer to someone who was less qualified. There were other red flags throughout the job offer process that the HR team should overall be ashamed of.

They ask so they can hire and give preferential treatment to those who classify themselves in various minority groups, and meet their DEI goals pushed on them by lenders.
I asked the AI and it says the voluntary questions asked about race, gender, etc. are for aggregate reporting and used for meeting DEI goals. It's not supposed to be used in the hiring process, but that doesn't mean it doesn't ever happen.
The AI says that the screening algorithms that review all the applications may introduce certain biases such as expressing preferential treatment of certain names, or it could use sorting algorithms that can result in unintentional discrimination.
It's partly what SE1 mentioned but not entirely. They also use that data to get a sense of the demographics that are showing interest in applying to their jobs. Maybe they notice that women are severely underrepresented in the applicant pool, so they can use that information to try to adjust their strategy and entice a certain demographic to apply. That being said, you can usually decline to answer those kinds of questions if you'd rather not.
