Why does some firms do their evaluations in March instead of January? Is it to force their attorneys to stay.

Staying for bonus, sure. Staying for an annual evaluation, why? If you are planning on leaving, the evaluation won’t matter. If a bad evaluation will make you leave, they probably want you to leave too (hence the bad evaluation), and sooner is likely better.

They likely are just pacing administrative tasks throughout the year. Nov.-Dec. is them figuring out partner promotions. Jan. Is likely dealing with figuring out annual stuff they have to do or track. That gives the Feb. to analyze associate metrics and Mar. to do reviews.

I definitely think it's to delay departures. That March bonus is still for the prior year, so they just got a few more months out of whoever is going to leave, and pushed them into a less attractive exit window too perhaps.

Some firms do evaluations in March to align with the end of the first quarter, giving more time to assess performance and ensure bonuses or raises are tied to year-end metrics. It’s not necessarily to force attorneys to stay, but it can help manage retention by offering incentives at a key point in the year.
If you’ve lost money to an online scam, don’t be too worried and speak out, recovery may be possible.

Mine does it in December.

My friend works somewhere where they don't give out bonuses until like June lol

Many firms have a fiscal year-end in December, which is rather rigorous. We conduct annual reviews and salary adjustments in July and bonuses at year-end. The goal for the management team is to space out all the activities to spread the workload.
