I work in a SNF and I’m extremely bothered by how therapists are treated in general. Hours are never consistent and if our caseload is low, we just don’t get to work and don’t get paid. It is the only type of professional industry where we are completely undervalued and don’t have consistent work. And forget about having good benefits or matching 401K or any type of retirement. I’m really regretting having such a specialized degree in a field that I don’t see a future with. There is no long term growth, no moving up a ladder. It’s stagnant. I’m pretty frustrated.
If SLPs from schools relocate and are contract employees, we cannot move our pensions( not that that’s a viable option in the land of teacher state pensions) and pay for our health ins and open a 401k that won’t be matched bc everything is temporary with contract jobs.
ASHA actually supports these companies that dissolve and rename themselves just like the “healthcare” companies that are buying out good hospitals and great autism schools and ruining them.
Am I the only one who is bothered by this?
It's not just you who is bothered by this, it's unfortunate how things are going. The only way to counteract this may be for SLPs (and other therapists) to start their own private practices so they can get the school contracts.
We can't all do that. There are many and I see that they pay hourly too. Many at the same rates. Experienced therapists who otherwise would have been rewarded with higher salary in a school system or hospital for their experience, are replaced by hourly contracts where the therapist is rewarded with 40$/hour but the company receives the going rate of 200-300/hour. This is how experienced therapists lose their worth and retirement.
100% true what a travesty! I can't keep going on like this. I start a job. I can get them but they let me go so quickly! I get a good paying contract job but I do something they don't like, like say something...i.e. I told a coworker a student was annoying. I told her the principal's son didn't qualify for an IEP cause his minimal breathing dysfluency didn't affect his academics. They let me go. That's it.
Go to ASHA and ask them to stand up for you. It’s an association and you pay high fees to be members of. So, It is their job to advocate for you if you cannot have a ‘union’ organization within and association. Or can we?
ASHA doesn't care. They just want their annual dues.
Completely agree. I am from the Northeast and home health rates are the lowest in the country. When I started in the field in 1997, I had a great Homecare job 40 hours a week. Then, after having my son, I worked for another Homecare company 3 days a week, great pay! I can't find a job that offers anything but per diem. Seems to work in the employer's favor! (Both of those companies are out of business)
