Imagine buying a used car and not knowing which one might have underlying issues. Then your friend goes, hey I know someone who’s selling a great car, you should test drive it. You’re more likely to believe that the risk with that car is much lower than picking a random one and doing all checks/history/tests on it yourself

1) The recruiters pay much more attention to referrals than the 100,000 submissions they get a year, also depending on seniority of referrer.
2) Yes fine for global firms like us, can't comment on others.
Referrals often work in nearly every type of company, not just consulting. Referrals are the simplest way to “vouch” for someone, traditionally we would refer people we know at least somewhat, either a friend or a former colleague (I think Fishbowl has reduced the meaning of referral since we all offer to refer anyone even if we don’t know them)
