When I was younger and first starting out, I thought talking about my salary with my coworkers would get me fired. I didn't know the law and my employer made it seem like they could fire me for talking about my salary. But now, I know better, and if I think someone might be comfrotable with discussing their salary, I'll ask them.
Talking openly about salaries is often taboo because of social norms and fear of conflict or judgment, even though it is legally allowed. Most companies do not encourage transparency, so employees keep quiet to avoid tension or perceived inequality. A few firms actively promote salary transparency, but it remains the exception rather than the rule.
salary transparency can lead to jealousy, resentment, and dissatisfaction within the workplace. I am not against it, but those are the potential risks.
