Public or private just driving to school is exponentially more dangerous for your kids than attending it.
I went to private school. I think there are 2 types of people that go to private school. 1. Kids with good income that can pay for it. 2. Kids that have issues where their parents think private will help them. There are soooo few school shootings relative to how many students there are... So it's a numbers game I'd assume. Private schools are just a tiny fraction of the overall school population.
210,000 people die per year of preventable medical errors, only 200-500 or so via homicides committed with a rifle (or about 5100 with all firearms, excluding suicides, police fired shootings). You are 42x more likely to die due to a Doctor/nurse error than a shooting, but no one says don't send your kid to a hospital. All this is per the FBI data, not the CDC statistics used by the media to try and drum fear/viewership.
Put another way, 33k people die a year from traffic accidents in the US, so more than 6x the people who die of a firearm homicide. Will your wife stop letting kids travel in a car - they are more likely to die than when they are in school.
When you factor in that many of these are concentrated in gang members or residents of high crime areas the chance is even slimmer (no that these deaths are less, but likely in your situation less likely to impact your kids).
Don't get me wrong, school shootings shouldn't happen, but they media has a way of making it seem like every kid will be affected. You don't see moms saying kids can't ride in cars, when statistics would confirm it is a much deadlier activity. Take a step back and look at the stats first not the emotional response that is all to common in modern American rhetoric. We are consultants afterall- data should play some role in decision making.
Unfortunately it can happen anywhere bigger issue than just changing schools. Get out and vote, volunteer, donate, etc.... something to get more elected officials to do something about it. I would guess most parents have the philosophy to our kids don’t complain about something unless you’re willing to do something about it.
SC1 - with the new tax plan, 529 plans can now be used for k-12 education instead of just college.
I have twins and I can’t afford private school. I’m considering moving to Canada.
But just because it hasn’t happened at private schools doesn’t inherently mean it can’t
Look at the statistics and probability. I’m a data driven person and find those numbers help when emotion starts to pull you in directions
I'm planning on leaving the country too. Way to many abductions, abuse, shootings, etc. Definitely safer countries out there with better quality of living
It is happening in schools more often than not but I now fear the same in any gathering. Open fields for soccer; hell was looking around for safe spots while starting the Susan Komen 5K today morning! Scary! Root cause has to be fixed else nowhere we are safe!
The likelihood your next flight does down in flames are 10x higher than your kid being shot at school.
If you're that worried, try moving to Canada. I have an 8 year old right now and worry about the too. We're in a great school district in Colorado... Not too far from Columbine. I grew up in the hood in Denver and in some ways I think that's safer than the burbs. These shootings seem like they're more in affluent areas than inner city.
Driving is largely unavoidable. School shootings are very avoidable. Don't be stupid
Agree that there is no way to avoid my kid dying all together, but if there is an opportunity to lower the chances (by putting the kid into private school), shouldn’t we take it? Like buying a car with a great safety rating - still a chance we could be in an accident, but taking steps to improve our chances of survival
I would focus more on how to enjoy life. Spending your life trying to de-risk from extremely rare events is a horrible way to live. Don’t let your wife fall down this trap or the next couple of decades will be miserable.
Is private school any safer?
His public school is good, but they’ve had a few active shooter drills and a false alarm earlier this year
C1 - yes. There are a bunch of articles on it, but private schools have been mostly spared from shootings. Almost all happen at public schools
Yes..i have a 1 year old. I'm totally saving for private school education. No way I'm sending her to public school.
C1, not too far behind you. With every shooting, the conversation becomes more certain
