It's something that was lost a long time ago. Companies like Facebook are able to track your activity across the internet, even if you don't have an account. There's really not much hope of any of us protecting our data against that, at least in America. Europe seems to be stricter about this sort of thing, but even there I'm sure major companies are still able to accumulate a ton of data.
Lost long ago. I get letters about how my data might have been part of some breach. Oops, nothing to be done about it, just make sure you watch out for things on your end. Oh, here is a few months of free credit monitoring. Whatever.
While I do get paranoid, most of the time I feel like the battle is lost anyways. Of course I try not to overly expose myself, but sometimes it seems like what’s done has been done. I know big tech and the government has everything they need on me whether I care or not, and it's only going to get more invasive.
I generally feel like that horse has long been out of the barn. But I'm still pretty careful about things. I guess most of us are protected against hacking just by being ordinary people. It must be awful to gain any kind of prominence and have people targeting you. The thing with the TikTok ban is that there is a legit case to be made that it's a foreign data collection operation. But that gets lost in all the other gibberish and political stunts surrounding the controversy.
Lost long ago. I had my full background investigation file including social security number, fingerprints, family member names, dates of birth, etc. stolen in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) data breach back in 2014-2015. As a result, I have had free credit monitoring for years now. I take steps to protect my privacy the best I can, but it really is like trying to extinguish an erupting volcano with a cup of water.
