Would any of you consider moving to Ohio and working there? I don't mind filling in for the demand but thought I should ask here if there are people with experience...

I see the marketing push is working on you. A lot of the red states are experiencing “brain drain.”

I saw ads begging people to move to West Virginia and Iowa

Never. I have nothing against Ohio—I think it’s a fine state and great for many. However, I would never consider moving there for a few reasons:

1. I’m not from the Midwest, so I think I would be a poor cultural fit, both personally and professionally.
2. I work at a Biglaw firm, and the only one I know of in Ohio is JD, where I wouldn’t want to work.
3. I’m currently in a big legal market and in Biglaw, so I can’t see myself moving to a smaller market with fewer opportunities.

I’m from Ohio. Depends on where in the Northeast. Cleveland? Maybe. Youngstown? Hell no.

like

Haha what's going on in Youngstown?

I live in Columbus, and it’s okay. Lol there’s definitely something for everyone here, but you have to try and find/create the space you’re looking for. I imagine the work isn’t much different than other places.

like

That's good to know :)

So I'm taking that it's not a good idea to move there.... thanks fishies!

like

Where do you live now?

I'm from Ohio. Would I move back? Probably not.

I'm from the Cleveland area. Currently live in a big city and love it here. Much more things to do here. For example, run clubs, sports leagues, food festivals. Public transportation is a whole lot better and more public green space. Just a more vibrant place to live. I'm single tho, so that probably makes a big difference. Cleveland is a great place to raise kids.

I was never able to break into Big Law. If I had the chance to work at a big firm, then maybe.

I’ve always been a big saver minimum 15% to maxing out my 401k since I graduated college. I’m married to someone who thinks 6% is enough and likes $$$ cars. Other than the cars, they dont really spend money. For the married 🐠, how do you have the conversation with them that what they are doing isn’t enough? I try to guide them and say you want the $$$ cars but the salary you have won’t get there and you’re going to have to find a job that gets them the salary…. Then the fight starts.

I really feel like I should be excused from this "diversity and inclusiveness" training stuff lmao. It's about implicit bias and I'm sorry it's just not believable coming from an old white man's mouth when there are maybe 4 non-white associates. We're having these meetings 3 times this week. 🤦🏽‍♀️

What are the chances of getting a lower offer because you're POC applying at a fairly large law firm? Not big law or anything but still. Friend and I both got offers, came out of the same school and have very similar internship experience. He's white and I'm not, his offer is significantly higher. How low is low enough to walk away?

LA fish: Any ideas for Pro Bono assistance for nonprofit community/cultural orgs? A family member recently joined the board of a nonprofit community/cultural org and is looking for counsel. I’m unable to represent them myself due to my work and lack of experience, and I’m unfamiliar with potential resources. Thank you!

I'm a younger plaintiff's side attorney (31). Does anyone else feel like white attorneys give you a particularly harder time? Like unreasonably denying clear facts, or trying to fish for a way to sanction you? Usually it's solo defense attorneys that get extreme with it, but I've seen some questionable stuff from BigLaw too. Hopefully I'm not the only one.
