Would you rather be a non-equity partner at Wilson Elser or a staff attorney at Cravath? Assume same pay, but lower hours as staff attorney. However, staff attorney role consists of tedious disco review work, and very unlikely to move to partner track or counsel position.

Non equity partners as Wilson Elser aren’t getting rich, but they make more than a staff attorney anywhere. Probably in the 200-300 range. Doubt a Cravath “staff attorney” makes more than $140-$150k. Also it is highly unlikely that someone would be in line for these two opportunities. But I’d love to hear more details about how I’m wrong. Interesting thought experiment.

Staff attorney at Milbank. Cravath is overrated

As a ex-Cravather, presuming reasonable hours there is wildly incorrect.

At my next job, folks were like, "What do you mean you never went home until all possible work was done?"

like

Don’t work for Wilson Elser at all 😂

why?

Tbh neither sounds ideal. I’d lean staff attorney at Cravath if these were my only two options.

🐠, I was laid off from industry during covid and started consulting this year, which was a step back in terms of level and salary. I have received an offer that would allow me to course-correct and advance past where I was before. I like my current firm and have put a lot of effort into making it my new home; however I don’t like my project and am stuck on it. I am terrified of making a move so soon into a role that isn’t a fit or worse, results in another layoff. Appreciate all perspective!

Dyslexia! After having our kindergartener son tested (privately) related to ADHD, we were told he may have dyslexia too (which would explain why he struggles so much with phonics but is amazing at sight words). He has a very high IQ. As a voracious reader, I am finding myself unexpectedly distraught that something that I have loved so much will be such a struggle for him, and worrying that it will affect his motivation and may steer him away from things he may otherwise love.

Lit boutique v. full-service statewide regional firm as mid-level commercial lit lateral out of biglaw. Things to consider? Pay and non-equity partnership prospects are similar with similar timeline. it feels like every survey about working from home is (poorly) designed to answer the useless question "would you rather work from home or from the office." I submit that the set of people who prefers to have only one of those two options, always and forever, is the null set. which means it DOES NOT MATTER because the correct answer is always going to be "make both possible." you're welcome, HR departments everywhere.
