As an ADC applying this summer for 2022 start, I haven’t gotten a chance to connect with any L.E.K. Consulting members and I really want to get to know the company better before moving on with my application. Any L.E.K. Consulting fish out there willing to spare a few minutes to chat about their work, the company, the culture etc? Thanks!

It's just a reality that visibility, or office politics, or whatever one wants to call it, is a part of getting ahead in business. I once had a boss who told me if you do great work and no one notices, you might as well have not done it. He was exaggerating, but there's a lot of truth to that. It's not enough to be good, people have to know it.
I disagree I ran a tight ship and all it got was. Terminated under false pretenses. I ignored all the poor and vehement derogatory comments to my peers and those around me. Then there is the lack of recognition for my success. I’ve found that promotions are completely one the good old boys system and sometimes the luck of being seen. Office politics will always play a part in society and the corporate world
To be completely honest, I really disagree with you. I’ve been in situations where I’ve managed teams of people who had skills I didn’t have, but under my leadership, I was able to see the hold ups and the areas that needed improvement, I was able to clear distractions for my team, and allow them to work more effective and efficiently, minimizing efforts to maximize outcome and went from #7 to #1 out of 15 in out district. All of these people were well-seasoned, well-trained, certified professionals and I was a lime-green newbie BUT I had a fresh perspective and new ideas that I knew worked. I wasn’t the most experience, at all. But had they gone with more of the same they would still be sitting at 7the place instead of 1st

Sometimes promotions are clearly because of favoritism and are unfair, but we can’t wait for them to be fair, they’re not legally required to. I’ve learned that if I don’t advocate for myself, it won’t happen. I’ve had the luck of being recognized and have been passed over as well. In any case, I know my capabilities and what I’m worth. If I want something, I go for it.
Stop waiting to be noticed and start making it easy for people to do so. Speak up in meetings, send follow-up emails, make your contributions attributable. It feels performative and it is, but it's a necessary evil if you're serious about moving up.

Absolutely, that hits hard. It’s frustrating when effort and results take a back seat to visibility or politics. So many talented people get overlooked because the right people didn’t see them shine. Makes you wonder how much energy you put in actually counts.
If u work really hard at your job and it unnoticed, look for another job, Honey.
Visibility means positioning your work to be seen and impressive enough so you have as many people promoting your name as possible. Promotions are rarely decided by one person alone, so you want every stakeholder possible to see you as the best choice. It's marketing yourself, is all! Just making sure people see the value you show up and provide each day. Building brand recognition is important for a career, too!
I agree, that it seems that the harder you work, and your dedication doesn’t seem to matter, the staff is being cut, and they are expecting a lot flmorenwork with less staffing
I have been told on more than one occasion," if you didn't live in (flyover state) you would be a regional manager by now". Good to know the only thing holding me back is not living in State that's "important."
I feel this deeply. Delivering results consistently is only part of the equation—knowing how to be seen and heard strategically is just as important. The real skill is making your work speak in the right rooms without losing focus on quality.
Retail is what you make of it. I’ve progressed from being a team member to a shift supervisor, then to assistant department manager, head department manager, and assistant store manager, ultimately becoming a general manager making over $100,000 a year—all within a span of 5-7 years.
How did I achieve this? I actively put myself in positions to seek out opportunities. I never waited for my manager or anyone else to help me reach the next level. You don’t have to stay with a company for years to find advancement; instead, take everything you’ve learned in your role and observe the responsibilities of your direct manager. Begin to learn how to perform their job as well.
Good luck, and remember: never wait on your manager—make it happen for yourself!
