McK. I worked for IBM and I would never go back. There two years and I couldn’t ever get my blue pages manager to actually meet me. Had to use a project lead as a reference when I left.
Plus McK has waaaay better growth and exits
Yeah mckinsey analyst with 2 years of experience will get better offers than a manger at IBM 80% of the time. Mainly cause mckinsey will have alumni in better positions than the IBM alumni
Plus consultant comp at mckinsey (200-225k) is probably equal to IBM manager comp (190 -230)
McK no question. Comp might be lower now but will scale faster at McK, plus the exit options are way better
Yeah you can grow fast at IBM but Mck has standard pay structures where IBM undercuts organic hires.
I'm a former IBM senior managing consultant and here's my take...IBM has top-notch resources and will invest in innovation which is something a lot of firms talk about, but don't do. I would not say that it's easier to get a promotion at IBM at all, there's a thick layer of useless middle management there protecting their turf. You get paid more, because it's less stable environment, being hit with a layoff is a common response when they don't make their numbers. When I was there, I actually did receive a bonus, 25% (maybe they did away with that since I've left, IDK). Lastly, if you go to IBM, be ready for a highly political and cutthroat environment. I'm not trying to sound negative, just giving you the straight scoop. I actually admire IBM, but their business practices do not honor employee loyalty. Good luck in your decision.
Was at IBM consulting for 4years, can confirm all of the above. To add to it, I never received a raise in my time there and received a $400 bonus the year I left, it was embarrassing when my manager called me to tell this
You could be a partner at McK in 7-8 yrs making 1M+ so if you pride yourself as a top performer there’s your answer
IBM ! McK is too “strategic” and high level for me 😅 In long run, McK experience will be helpful if you want to be in consulting, if not - take IBM route.
You can always come back to Ibm later. Join mck and accelerate your career and earning potential.
Congrats
It's crazy that this was even a question and even crazier that anyone said IBM. we should all feel ashamed for participating in this post, and that this post took place in our society. I have to go take a shower now and think about what the hell we're doing to have brought this about. I suggest you all do the same.
Ok, I hope you went with IBM since you're such, like, an independent and free thinker
Mck. It’s not even close
McKinsey hands down
