I just moved to JC in a luxury apartment and I can’t believe I waited this long/had any hesitation to do so. It’s clean, friendly and really convenient. Pre-pandemic I lived in various places in Manhattan all with <25 minute commute to the office. It was nice in the early years, especially when cabbing home late night and desk to bed was less than 15 minutes. I’m still remote so I haven’t had to commute yet, but like the poster above I think wfh largely is here to stay. My tune might change if I’m expected to be in the office with any regularity, but who knows when/if that will be or if I’ll still be in Big Law then (I’m a 6th year now). With respect to social life, I’m 15 minutes by PATH to west village, which is generally where I go out. Given the tax savings here, I don’t blink at taking an Uber home at night. I vote JC!
So the question is- If you were me, would you choose to live in Jersey City with a 20-25 minute ferry commute (pay about $1,850 in rent for a luxury, spacious 2 bed/2bath apartment with a roommate + receive NJ income tax benefits) OR live with a roommate in a 2 bed/ 2 bath Downtown Brooklyn Gold Street area (pay about about 2.4k a month to live in a new but less luxurious-Aka no W/D in unit and stuff, 10 minute walk from the nearest subway stops). Brooklyn apartment would be about a 23-26 minute commute (includes about 16 minutes walking total and the rest in the subway). Any monthly savings would go towards paying back loans/investing to achieve financial freedom sooner! Sorry to ask you all to make my decisions for me - but I really do appreciate any insight/advice from fish 🐠
I would do cheaper option...can always move in a year if it isn't working out with the commute. Also, WFH is here to stay for a while imo, whether partners like it or not...so if there is the occasional day you don't want to come in, you'll be happy you are spending less. No matter what, if someone gets mad, lateral elsewhere in 2-3 years; it takes a REALLY long time to get pushed out even if you are doing nothing.
Is the total commute from Jersey City 20-25 or is that just time on the ferry? I would do the cheaper option. You’re going to be working 24/7 anyway and having the more luxurious place will feel nicer than the area you live in. The savings are significant between rent and taxes and your NY rent is only going to go up more and more. What’s the plan for getting home when you work late?
There’s a third option. Live with one roommate in a so-so apartment in the city.
