Long time lurker, first time posting, SpEd teacher for 21 years mostly with K3. I feel successful when I see kids I taught to read, especially when the foundation I give them helps them succeed in gen ed. The ones that come back as adults really show me that it works though. My favorite was the student whose mom brought him back and told me didn't remember me. I taught him to read in first grade, he got off an IEP, and was reading on grade level. His mom remembered who made him a reader! :)
Welcome and thank you for posting! That is a great story - and I think you articulated the essence of what makes our jobs so satisfying sometimes.
I don’t feel successful, yet. I am struggling with learning how to do what is best for kids, not just what lines up to our expectations, especially for my students with Autism. I keep reading articles by Autistic adults who report that school was abusive and torturous for them. I want to provide a better experience for my littles but I don’t know what that is supposed to look like in a public school setting. I feel like I have to push them a little outside their comfort zones to promote growth, but how much and in what ways should I push? I really have no idea what I am supposed to be doing. My district still wants to use ABA, but it seems like that is bad? I don’t feel successful at all.
I think the fact that you feel this way is actually a good sign. It shows you haven't "settled" and that you really care about your kids and their education and that you're continually thinking about what is best for them. I'd say keep it up and you'll start seeing more evidences of your success!
Isn’t part of student success for the student to feel grounded and safe? Being available to students is everything. The wrong teaching approach can shut a kid down. But when the relationship is solid, it really does build confidence. When the students trust you and can rely on the fact that you’ll be approachable when they need help, you’ve just done more for their cognitive growth than you’ll ever know.
You guys are the best! Hang in there, I know it’s tough. 💙
