👨🏼‍💻 A few folks have asked, so let’s do this again. I left consulting 2 years ago for a Google BizOps role. I’ve visited 25 of our offices and worked with 8 teams since. AMA

Is this like a humble brag thread? Help me understand why IGAF about working at Google or anywhere else? Especially because OP “can’t really help" anyone with a referral.

This thread is designed to make high performing but low self esteem consultants think that the grass is greener or that they haven’t quite made it.

You all have made it, beyond so many stretches of your imagination.

Live within your means and be nice to people, and your life will be really good— and definitely on par with everyone else in the top earner set — where we’re all so busy comparing ourselves to one another.

@D1: Knowing when a problem is actually a problem and when the risk of doing nothing can be accepted. I like google a lot more. Though my initial pay increase was modest, my pay has increased through a promotion rate that I don’t think would have been possible in consulting. I also work about 35% fewer hours

@C1: Depends on the level, and is only ~60% of the total comp picture. Google’s philosophy seems to be: use the salary to live, use the equity and bonus to help employees make investments. Mine was $90k when I started, $160k now

What skillset obtained from consulting led you to be a desired candidate to Google

@C5: Everyone seems to be intelligent at Google. Those that are lackluster are probably what we call “rest and vesters” that, when pushed, could carry a project.

My experience in consulting was to work a lot of hours, often well past my point of productivity, in the name of optics. When you don’t charge an hourly rate that doesn’t matter.

Useful skills: SQL, Python, knowing how to horse trade across multiple programs, using data to drive decision making, being able to communicate that to do initiative X may mean not doing initiative Y (and why that’s okay)

Should I be happy with just receiving my 3rd promotion in less than 2.5 years to Senior Consultant? Company growing fast, tenured employees getting burnt out/leaving and room opened up to move up quickly. Change in leadership recently as well. Was offered 17.5% increase and this is my first job out of school. I don’t want to grow too fast, but this seems too good to be true…
