👨🏼‍💻 A few folks have asked, so let’s do this again. I left consulting 2 years ago for a Google BizOps role. I’ve visited 25 of our offices and worked with 8 teams since. AMA

Is this like a humble brag thread? Help me understand why IGAF about working at Google or anywhere else? Especially because OP “can’t really help" anyone with a referral.

This thread is designed to make high performing but low self esteem consultants think that the grass is greener or that they haven’t quite made it.

You all have made it, beyond so many stretches of your imagination.

Live within your means and be nice to people, and your life will be really good— and definitely on par with everyone else in the top earner set — where we’re all so busy comparing ourselves to one another.

@BCG1: Two promos. Think I was under leveled when I was brought in

like

Chiming in as another Googler in a StratOps role that came from Monitor Deloitte - it’s a smooth transition. Most strong strategy folks from MBB, Big 4, OW, ATK should be able to do well here (assuming you are a good cultural fit & comfortable running with projects / don’t need a ton of hand holding).

like

@P6: Yo I totally agree with your assessment of privilege in consulting/professional services/banking/tech. It’s not like I founded Google or anything; I’m a cog in a 70k person machine.

I see a lot of posts on here asking how to get into Goog - understanding the company, what backgrounds they hire for what roles, what sort of non-tech work we actually do? I wish I’d known that before I was lucky enough to get tapped on the shoulder.

like

@P7: go-to-market analysis, big data visualization, executive presence, building persuasive pitches that are backed by data, humility when things go wrong. Recognize that a project that you’re not passionate about has the opportunity cost for a role that could truly stoke your passions. Google doesn’t put a lot into resume review, so I would focus on telling a good story in your interview that highlights the skills above.

Will second the promotion and pay increase rate. It’s quite competitive

@A1: If you’re based in MTV and live in the city, most teams have desks in SF that you can work out of one day a week. WFH depends on your manager. I work from my desk 4 days and from home on Fridays (my “no meeting” day)

likehelpful

@D2: one guy came straight from Yale MBA. One from Apple’s Corp Strat. Google doesn’t do many networking events that aren’t focused on diversity. Most I know were referred, but that isn’t a free pass through the interview process (I still interviewed 11 times)

like

@P3: So earnest! Not sure what I could actually do to help, but happy to answer questions about areas of the company that might match your background. Most of our AMER roles are in SF/NY

What was your starting offer in total comp your first year

@A1: A recruiter invited me to apply. I still have no idea who referred me, and getting access to your own HR file is practically impossible. 🤷🏼‍♂️

@C5: a referral is the best way in, and the referral form is explicitly designed to weed out instances in which you don’t know the candidate.

Pretty good comp package ! Congrats

P4- if you joined Facebook, surely you’d have an idea about how business people are viewed in tech...

@C6:

1) L5, 160k
2) whatever you want as long as you deliver. The culture enforces diminishing returns past 50 hours, though; google does not reward hero work

3) Associate - left the team to take an L5 role

4) as many as they need (at least 3 and as many as 15; I did 11). They’re not all cases

5) MBB, ATK, Hackett, Accenture

@SC3: BizOps is the better fit. Our PMs code

@SC3: leadership, googleyness, team player, and I can’t remember the other. A mix of background, behavioral, and case. A round of each with my immediate team and a couple teams that were candidates for me to “consult”. One with senior leadership. No technical, no brain teasers

likehelpful

@SM1: I found it a little easier to be passionate about BizOps than Accenture because I was enabling ambitious product launches that align with my values, which are left of center. My new job is with Next Billion Users, which I expect to patch my bleeding heart quite nicely. My clients at Accenture were not only in conflict with my values as an individual, but seems pretty ungrateful for our services to boot

First post, not sure if this is the best bowl to use but here goes. I’m wondering if anyone can share a bit about their experience working at MongoDB. I have seen they are hiring for many roles and am curious to hear about their experience. In particular, I would like to hear about software engineer roles. Currently I work on database engine C++ code and have seen some roles that indicate continuing down this stream would be possible with my skillset.
