I'm not ending the first call or interview without a firm understanding of what the compensation is going to look like. There isn't anything pushy about wanting clarification on salary. "Just to make sure we're aligned, can you give me the salary range you've budgeted for this position?" They should want you to have this info IMO. Going through a multi round interview process only to reject the offer is just as much a waste of their time as yours.
Be pushy and call them out on it. If they told you that it was flexible, then it better be flexible.
I don't consider it pushy, it's just practical. No point in wasting anyone's time interviewing for a job if I'm not going to accept what they can offer. If they can't cite a salary range at the outset they're just not a serious organization.

I just can’t stand when they give this huge range and you tick 95% of their boxes, but their “budget” just happens to fall right in the middle! If I have the experience and smoke the interviews, I want closer to the top of that range. Getting tired of this lowball nonsense and all these other “perks” that are supposed to compensate for it! The only perks that matter in this case is less hours, more PTO and less work! Less $, less work! Very simple! You get what you pay for!
I put 0 for expected comp sometimes . I have still gotten interviews doing this .
Just ask. Tell the recruiter you want to know and don’t take on any assignments without knowing the exact salary wage.
