I’m not a manager but if you’re being promoted I can only assume they believe in you & think you are ready! Take their confidence in you & build on it! Good luck, you deserve it!

like

Your first project is going to make you feel like you have no idea what you’re doing but just keep trucking, you’ll learn a lot and make mistakes but by your second/third project you’ll feel so much more confident! Just don’t bear yourself up on your first project because you will make mistake

Be a good listener!! A large part of managing people is being able to listen to their perspectives and being equitable/fair. It's not always an easy balance so definitely work with your team to figure out the right style

Although your team anticipates hearing from you, a healthy partnership calls for feedback to go both ways. Never let your direct reports believe that their interaction with you is solely focused on what they can provide for you.

Trust is the key to it all. Give them the benefit of the doubt if you want to establish a respectful connection with your direct reports and demonstrate your confidence in them. You want to create a setting where employees feel secure enough to try new things, fail, absorb lessons from their failures, and develop.

Avoid automatically blaming the individuals on your team when anything goes wrong, such as missed deadlines or failed goals. Instead, approach the issue from a systems perspective. This implies that you look at the issue holistically rather than selectively.

It's acceptable to call for help if you're a new manager. Keep in mind that you don't have to be an expert. Management and leadership skills must be developed over time. There will be many occasions when you feel overwhelmed, but always remember to step back.

Speak with your trusted peers, mentors, or management. Be careful not to allow the initial tension of your new position develop into the ongoing stress of burnout. Before it gets to this point, make yourself heard and request what you need. You should do this not only for your own benefit but also for the benefit of your team.

That's great news! Congrats on your new job, OP. Don't hesitate to ask for help if you need anything. That will also help you adjust.

Wow! Good to hear, OP! Be confident and trust your abilities! Good luck!

Hello, I’m an associate (almost at the one year mark) at a midsize firm on the EPL team. I did about 2 years of employment law as a clerk during school and know that’s what I want to go into. I’ve asked for more EPL work but keep catching PI cases. I second-chaired an employment trial but don’t see any EPL work for the foreseeable future and wasn’t getting as much EPL exposure as I wanted before the trial. Any advice on a lateral move to a bigger firm with a broader range of EPL work?

Currently scheduling “on sites” for a S&O role in CA. My referrer said they can hire as L5 or L6. Would like to land in the L6 bucket as I’ve heard 5 --> 6 is one of the more challenging promotions.

I’m looking for info on what the real difference is in responsibilities (manager vs IC, cross functional vs focused, etc) so I can focus on checking the L6 boxes during my interviews.

I’m also curious about whether this is something that I should just discuss with my recruiter directly?

Hi, fishes.
A quick query here.

I'm going to move from non IT profile to IT profile. Basically I'll be applying as front end engineer in new company. Previously I was working in a BPO profile.
Just wanted to ask if I'll be provided training in my initial months as a front end engineer or am I expected to work from the very first day.
Your comments will be really helpful.

Thank you.

My company went toxic in the last couple months. Chose me and started interviewing. Had a very successful interview with Amazon but recruiter is working hard trying to place me and said there’s no knowing how long to find a team. Meanwhile I just received a Director offer for a company with a 29% pay bump July 1. If Amazon or any other FAANG/large co gets back to me, is there an acceptable way to not burn bridges with new job and accept or delay start date with FAANG? Or fuck it just hop?

Has anyone successfully made the career move from an HR specialization to an HRBP role? If so, how? I have been working for 7 years in a very niche HR specialization and while I wear many hats on the HR team, I feel like this is hard to express to recruiters or even get an interview for an HRBP role. My niche area has really burnt me out, as it’s very political and I want to expand my horizons. I am already working on completing my GPHR certification. Any other tips?

I have an interview lined up for a Corporate Banking analyst role. I was wondering how the interview process looks like? Any leads?

How would you approach an interview process where the company sounds exciting but you feel confident the role would not be a growth opportunity for your skill set? Is there a good way to respectfully approach that topic with the interview team and find a role that might be more exciting for you? Or is it better to walk away?

Will it be too high salary to ask for a Manager(M2)-Data Analytics position in Deloitte Consulting UK?
If no, then will it be good enough for 3 people to lead a decent life in London (Like Hounslow or Milton Keyes) including a 2 year old kid. Traveling to London on daily basis.
If yes, then kindly suggest a reasonable salary range for this role.

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school
