Option 2 in every way
I added a bit more context in the comments - Option 2 is definitely more appealing from an “aspirational” POV, but it also has a ton of unknowns
Google will likely give you more possibilities for your next career move than Goldman Sachs. Same with working in Europe. Get the variety of experience and work for a more multifaceted company.
Also worth digging in / talking to people who live and work in Europe, the tax and benefit structure is so different its hard to get a sense of what your compensation and lifestyle will really be based solely on salary numbers.
Good point, I would definitely need to understand all that. It’s a pretty high COL city, there is a lot of logistical details I’d still need to understand.
option 2 hands down. when you come back home after europe, you land something even bigger (or can even go to GS). though it’s a pay cut, the brand (google) helps a lot
More details:
The Goldman Sachs opportunity is appealing because it sounds like a great team, and the hours wouldn’t be crazy like on the Investment Banking side. There’s a lot of room for growth, and the earning potential is very high.
Google is very attractive, but it’d be a huge pivot in my life to move to another country with my GF and puppy. She’d have to give up her career most likely, and we’d obviously miss out on a lot of things like weddings, engagements, etc. I can definitely see myself at Google long term as well though, and would ideally move back to the states after a few years.
I don't know about the girlfriend, but at least you can count on your puppy :)
What is your overall passion? Which one are you more passionate about and not from a career perspective.
Be happy about your life, live your life not your career.
If you are happy about your life, where you live and what you are experiencing, then you will be happy about going to work, be motivated and you will work hard and you will get promoted and make up the 30% gap rather quickly.
You will have more options at Google from a career perspective that goes beyond media.
If you stay in advertising/marketing and/or tech Google is better on the resume. I think overall Google is “better” on the resume especially if you go into other roles beyond what you are doing now.
It will open up more doors. Also Google is more progressive and flexible from a career and working environment perspective. They try to push a more modern and adaptable work culture. GS no matter what they say is still old school finance. Two completely different cultures.
You will make good money at Google, or you will get poached with a big offer. Be patient with that. The money will come bc it will always be there.
You are young, enjoy your life and take the leap.
Are both onsite jobs? If so, I can tell you after 20+ years agency side, going client-side in the financial category will be a huge difference in terms of environment/culture if that is important to you. I found that there wasn't as much connecting with people other than just about the work. People tended to come in, do work with headphones on, go to meetings, leave, and repeat. Work/life was better but the days were still long.
^ I worked at capital one for a hot second & hated the fact that I was eventually only thinking about finance. Seems like a no-brainer now but I didn’t expect to get that tunnel vision; it was a stark contrast from the variety you get at an agency.
Option 2
Can the partner come with you to Europe? Visas often stipulate that you have to be married.
I hadn’t thought about that, I assumed she could but if she couldn’t, that would obviously change my decision - I’ll look into that!
Chief
What country? Europe is a big place.
My guess is Dublin
Google. Going to the financial side even at GS will send you down a path of financial jobs. Google will open any door that you want. Do Europe for a few years and move back if don't like it.
