Don’t apply until you can present yourself well.
Shoot your shoot. Send the recruiter a message along with your link. Be honest. Let them know that while your portfolio isn’t exactly where you’d like it to be at this point, you love what they do and if given the opportunity, you’d work your ass off to do the kind of work you know you’re capable of making.
This is really good advice. I’ve never regretted sending my book anywhere but I’ve regretted not sending it. Damn, I need to take that advice in my own life right now... thanks OP!
Also, don’t be ducking afraid homie! If it’s your dream at some point you’ll need to take the risk. Maybe not today, but if you keep doubting yourself, you’ll never get it ;)
OP as in you’re making some tweaks to your book that will be done soon. Or you are trying to add prices to your portfolio in a process that will take months or longer?
Months
At an agency I worked at we had a former account intern apply for multiple account and strategy rolls. HR viewed this as a person more interested in saying they work at the agency instead of having a job they like.
I say shoot your best shot, but do your best to network with people and view it as a longer plan. My spouse recently switched from agency to client and part of that was maintaining a relationship with someone for close to a decade.
I think if you try and fail, and try again really be very clear that it’s a new and improved book the 2nd time round. Otherwise if I remembered it, I’d be like ‘nah, seen it...'
It’s an big name agency held by an umbrella corporation, if it matters.
I would wait until you know you have a good book. It’s hard enough getting a job even if you have a good book.
