This is terrible plane etiquette to take a call and be speaking.
A plane is my one final bastion of quiet and freedom. Please don’t ruin it by setting a bad example so clients start expecting this!
Please don't do this
Go directly to jail
« You undercook fish? Believe it or not, jail. You overcook chicken, also jail. Undercook, overcook. » 😂
Why in the world are you joining a mtg while on the plane ?
PM 1 is incredibly right.
But to answer your question, it’s because plane wifi caps (or straight up eliminates) upstream bandwidth
That is very true, they cut off your upload bandwidth very low hence the poor audio. Also for the benefit of others don't use video on your calls unless absolutely necessary. You might also expose unwanted information that way as there's no real privacy sitting in a plane.
This is illegal. Why are you risking your freedom for a work call?
Lighten up, Francis
I’ve done this listening but never speaking. Too much noise.
The wifi isn’t made for you to have interactive video streaming on planes
Isn’t this illegal? Pretty sure they tell you on the plane it’s against the law to take voice or video calls.
Since when do people follow laws (drugs, murder, stop lights, jay walking)
Oh eff that. The only saving grace of flying is I don’t have to talk to people. Like hell I’ll be making calls on a plane.

I’ve done a group Zoom video call for 45 minutes on a major US airline with no issues (with me speaking a bunch too). And without a mask on! A couple of flight attendants brought me drinks while I was on the call and don’t seem to care at all. Use common sense, though. I was in the bulkhead row of an almost completely empty first class cabin and no one else could hear me. If you might disturb people around you, just listen without speaking and put your comments in the chat (I’ve done that too).
That’s the real point of the FAA rules. They come out of a public comment period where the majority of responses said they don’t want to be disturbed by people having calls, not because of technical issues or risk.
Ironically, the restriction ends up being rather elitist, as you’re free to make calls using the satellite phone at your seat, but high prices limit those m to people able to spend a lot. (Back in the seatback Airfone days, Verizon customers could make AirPhone calls for 10 cents/minute. I made a lot of onboard calls, mostly because I was young and it seemed novel.)
If Bluetooth was dangerous or in violation of FAA rules, than my bag in the language compartment is violating it as well as it is tagged! I’m sick with the knowitall “experts” on this thread. What a nonsense?!
You must be a real pain in the ass to fly with.
Also, that’s illegal.
So many haters here! I’m bringing all my 3 kids on my next flight and seating them next to you. The youngest is 3! You want quieter space, go sit on the toilet. Planes are metallic cans packed with sardines and not meant for meditation.
I’m surprised you thought it was okay to take a work call on an airplane. I get that work can be busy, things can feel critical, but it’s also hard to see the forest from the trees.
Next time you have the urge to talk on the phone on a plane, just look out the window and think about how important you really are.

If you’re replying to me, it was actually a group reunion I really wanted to join and not a work call. Unfortunately I didn’t have another flight option. Again, if any crew had asked me not to, I would have complied. And if any other pax were disturbed, I wouldn’t have spoken (and I had headphones on, of course).
Please don't do this.
I had to join traffic court from 35k feet via Zoom. I just typed my answers into Chat and said I was flying. Would not speak on phone in plane b/c rude.
Most comments here are wrong!
Using VOIP protocol on a plane to call/video is NOT illegal. Most flights provide Internet services! The old cellphones were removed because nobody wanted to pay $5 bucks a minute to call mama!
It might annoy the heck out of the other sardines in the can but that’s all about it.
Doesn't using Bluetooth jack up the plane while it's in the air ?????
No
You're a monster.
It is not allowed to make calls on airplanes through wifi or cellular networks
