Idk the potential layoff is hitting me hard. I work in tech and really liked my job, company, and coworkers. Our company is just not doing well

No just annotate (acquired by xxxx) on your LinkedIn or resume. It's not uncommon for people to jump or be cut at acquisition.
The internship isn't a hop and both are basically 2 years.
Job hopping is voluntarily leaving. I imagine there's not one thing you can name that you could've done to stop an acquisition or this layoff that's coming.
Note the acquisition on the resume but talk about the layoff in person when asked.
I was laid off in 2015 in the oil & gas downturn. As soon as I said the words 'then the downturn started' everyone knew. So explaining something didn't turn out as expected and you were part of an overall layoff is nbd.

Move on. There's all kinds of reasons and this idea you owe some company a ton of time so you look like a 'good egg' is nonsense.
OP: you're fine. I've been in the workforce almost 15 years. Everything you've described happens across a myriad of organizations for various reasons. When you find a place that is collectively (1) stable, (2) is what you're look for and (3) continues to challenge and grow you along the way, you'll stay there longer.
Cheers to you finding a new adventure. Sorry you're getting caught up in this.
I wouldn’t call that job hoping. For me it’s when you stay 1 year max at a job, several times in a row.
Seems to me what you’re doing is perfectly fine.
Job security is an illusion anyway. Life is an adventure! Why would you want to spend it all in one place anyway?

No. I’m mid career and pretty old school on this stuff but with your explanation it all makes sense.
If applying make sure you have a well crafted cover letter to explain (but position positively) and you should be fine

What’s this hedge fund experience! How did you make it?
A lot of self study and through a newly formed HF. It was interesting, but they were simultaneously raising capital and making investments. It was very scrappy and they couldn’t provide the mentorship I needed to make a career out of it. I was doing everything from investor relations to speaking with new firms to research. It was a lot and I definitely wasn’t on partner track to be doing all that.
It is for me at first glance, but denote the reason on the resume and it will be ok. The cover letters usually never make it to the business lines when reviewing.
