Any career advice? I'm active Army, getting out in June. Hopefully get a data scientist role, self-taught on DS with datacamp. BS in mech eng, MS in Cyber Operation 4/6 done. Planning on CS after that master. TS/SCI w/ CI. Ultimate goal is getting in Amazon or Microsoft cleared division as a data scientist or software engineer. What companies gonna be a good start point to start DS career and salary expectations? And what would you choose if you can start over, swe or data scientist? Thank you.

Amazon or Microsoft could hire you as a data scientist assuming you can pass the coding interview.

Or you can see if you can get into Microsoft’s LaunchCode’s bootcamp. It’s a guaranteed job at Microsoft contingent on passing the bootcamp. This year would be the 3rd cohort. Last 2 cohorts required a TS/SCI with CI poly at a minimum and willing to take a FS poly.

If you’re interested in Amazon, they have the software development apprenticeship, which is what I’m going through right now. You get paid 66% of what a full time SDE makes (still 6 digits) for being in the apprenticeship and they teach you to code. You get full benefits of an Amazon employee minus stocks. This cohort does not require a clearance but other cloud apprenticeship with Amazon will.

Booz Allen has the tech excellence program, where they put you through a coding bootcamp through General Assembly.

Accenture and Deloitte have a ServiceNow developer bootcamp that requires a TS/SCI with Poly.

Sure. It’s for vets and spouses of vets only though.

But OP said Army so I thought I’ll share.

Best advice: do a skill bridge with one of your target companies. That will set you up best.

SWE is would be more versatile than data science, but honestly both are pretty good and interesting.

MSFT is really hurting for cleared engineers, so they will be much more willing to bring you on and train you.

Salary - that will depend on the role and how well you interview. The clearance bonus will def help you out at both companies. But honestly, you should be between $120-220 TC

Thank you for sharing. Unfortunately, one of the higher up hates long internship programs even though people are about to get out. I would definitely try!

Have you looked into the Hiring Our Heroes program? I know Grant Thornton participates.

Any job openings for indirect purchase and maintenance

Howdy…I need a sanity check! As part of my previous role, I reported security non-compliance and gross security misrepresentations. For my valiant efforts I was laid off (despite being a protected whistleblower) and my reports were buried. Everything I did was in line with my responsibilities. I was extremely concerned that systems housing personal credit data on all US consumers were not adequately protected. I essentially risked my job to protect data and I’m not sure if it mattered.

Clawback clause in current contract: been in role for over 2 yrs, it was an internal move that required relocation. Relocation was approved shortly after (over 2 yrs ago) but covid meant the actual move and start of my contract with new subsidiary was delayed, I was paid by the previous subsidiary meanwhile. I got small relocation package. Would internal move be subject to a buy-out/clawback clause if I leave now and if yes, is it time in role or time under new contract? Any experience? Thanks!

Do Leidos, SAIC, and other mostly-fed consulting businesses pay bonuses to all levels? If so, what does a typical bonus target look like? Booz Allen does not pay bonuses until you get to the Senior Associate level (1 step below Director) and I think that impacts employee performance and work ethic pretty dramatically. I’m wondering if not paying bonuses is common to federal contracting because of how the contracts or priced, or if this is something unique to Booz Allen.
