I’ll answer that for the ‘engineering’ function. The answer maynot be applicable for ‘IM’ function.
MBA from tier-1 will be overqualified, bcos M1’s salary is less than the avg salary of a freshers graduating from tier-1 (IIMA/B/C has avg salary of 35 LPA for freshers who graduate at the age of 23; whereas the starting salary of M1 is 30 LPA at the age of 33)
Also, M1/2/3 is an engineering management role, not a business management role. The role does not use anything that’s taught is business schools.
The role is also very airbus specific and needs high technical knowledge related to the domain they are managing. Hence, most of the M1/2/3 positions are filled through internal promotions, and are very rarely hired externally.
The M1/2/3 roles, in my opinion, doesn’t offer much transferable skillset, so it’ll be hard to switch to management positions at other companies.
Min 10 yrs exp needed for M1. Starting salary 30 LPA
Min 15 yrs exp for M2. Starting salary 35-40 LPA.
The M level promotions are vacancy dependant and not performance dependant.
It means, if you’re at M1, you won’t get M2 (no matter how much you perform) until an M2 vacancy is available. M2 vacancies get created only when new teams form through headcount increase or when an M2 person leaves the company. The number of M2 positions are very few, and hence going from M1 to M2 is hard. The number of M3 positions are even fewer, it might take a lifetime to get that.
