Non-equity is less money and less opportunity for leadership roles. That’s really it. If you like your work and are happy to make MD money and have slightly lower sales pressure, it doesn’t matter. But usually it’s not that much more work to be an equity owner and in most cases the folks who make MD lacked something needed to make partner/principal, although not always. If you truly have a choice, I would push to be an equity owner. The workload is not different enough to give up the additional compensation and opportunity.
MD is a level below Principal at KPMG
At KPMG MD is a mandatory rank before PP and many land there do not progress further.
At Deloitte it is one path or the other and conversions are rare.
Reality is both ranks at all B4 firms have a heavy mix of sales and delivery and it’s not as black and white as many would lead to believe. And becoming much harder to obtain PP because of equity preservation and market dynamics.
What kind of thoughts are you looking for?
Also mandatory retirement at 62 for partners/principals I believe.
