I have it and I take about 40 days a year. It's encouraged to use it to the fullest for work life balance.
That’s great!
My last position switched to unlimited PTO in January. It looks good for the company, because it doesn't show on their books. Then they laid me off in February. Guess what, the 120 hours of PTO that I had banked, was not paid to me. Because it was no longer "on the books". It's better for the employer than the employees!
My company doesn't pay out PTO anyway if you leave. There is an unlimited PTO option at the Senior Director and above level.
Yes, unlimited PTO but the amount of work you have does not allow you to take time off and if you do, good luck with catching up. No one is your back up.
Exactly. If PTO is used, it's frowned on by management and coworkers. So not really a job benefit if it's used against the employee.
Where do you work? I’ve never heard of such a thing.
There is! I've worked for two different companies that offered it to the management.
I've had friends who had it in their companies and the consensus opinion is that it's the biggest scam going. It's billed as unlimited, but you have to get it all approved. And, as you would expect, asking for time off brings a pretty negative attitude down on you. And the request may be denied. So yes, people probably wind up taking less time off. You're better to know how many days you are entitled to and to have that in writing.
My company all I have to do was put it on my calendar, I did not need approval.
There's unlimited PTO in healthcare?
I've had unlimited PTO in insurance but they always had an excuse why I couldn't take my unlimited PTO 😒
My husband took less time off with “unlimited PTO” than he does now with a normal limited amount of PTO
Never heard of such a thing. I’ve always had to earn my PTO. I get so many PTO hours for every hour I work.
Use it! Even if it’s just for a day of relaxation!
No, we get PTO based on how long we’ve been here. I have only heard of unlimited PTO in other places. Does seem like it is really dependent on where you are working and whether or not they are going to actually encourage it or try to be a pain with it.
I wouldn’t say unlimited, however, we get a buildup if we don’t use it it rolls over. I think we can bank up till like 600 hours. 400 regular PTO and then like 200 for an emergency bank.
I've heard that too, it almost sounds like a manipulative tactic. There have to be some people who ignore it though and go ahead and take a lot of time off. I'm guessing if you took too much you would eventually get counseled about it?
My old position had this and it allowed us to always have the ability to schedule last min doc appointments , unexpected kid stuff, and helped morale. The next year they capped our PSL and PTO because of some “law” that was still a law when we had unlimited. I’m not there anymore but it’s definitely not unheard of. How do you feel about it?
Unlimited PTO means you have to beg to use any of it and your boss can just deny it also it cant be paid out. I thought it would be great but it was much worse than get 2-3 weeks a year.
My office doesn’t actually have it but it wasn’t being monitored. the other MA at our office took off every other Monday and sometimes a week at a time. So I’d be left doing everything for both providers. Now that someone has told her she is out of PTO she is finally coming in.
That's so crazy that they weren't monitoring! If you are out of PTO and take time off, isn't it unpaid?
All unlimited PTO means is the employer is not required to pay you for any accrued time in the event of a separation. It only benefits the newly hired and the employer. It is a JOKE to anyone with 20+ years of service, since now our guaranteed 5+ weeks of PTO is up to management approval.
Yes exactly!!
I don't and even if i did, I wouldn't want it.
I have so much use or loose PTO every year because it's actually counterproductive for me to take any time off because I don't have a back up to help me with my workload while I'm out. So I come back and am immediately stressed because I'm overly busy trying to match up on my work assignments. I even have to force myself not to think about all the work piling up on me while I'm out.
I’m the same way. I work 154 days a year. I got 130 PTO hours right now and I used 48 I’d have almost 200 otherwise but because I do work three 12 hours shifts I barely wanna take off
I worked in a higher management job where this was the case. But you were so needed that it was impossible to actually take a vacation without shutting off your phone
We suddenly had it starting January 1st this year at my company; cannot fathom what the catch is, we just have to get our supervisor's approval first. I'm sure there's a hidden, nefarious purpose behind it.
I think it varies based on the manager, honestly. Some teams get to take a lot of time and others not so much.
