Why wouldn't you just wait to quit until after the leave is over? That's pretty common.
Having to pay back the leave in this circumstance car is not uncommon. Make sure you fully understand those ramifications before making the decision. Another consideration is if you’d need to have another job lined up immediately. The first two months of parenthood is not a great time to be job hunting!
You may just want to consult a labor attorney. (Congrats on the new roommate btw!)
Read your employee handbook / HR documents. See what their policy is.
But whatever you do, don't quit until your leave is up.
I know of a few colleagues who took the time during their leave to start applying for other positions, so maybe you could start doing that and wait till your leave is up.
I had a friend who lined up a new job to start at the end of her mat leave!
