PwC has provisionally cleared me to join the firm first week of Jan. What does this mean? Can I start working with them even if the background check is still running in parallel? Can I quit my current job and expect everything to be cool? They said it's taking them longer to verify education and previous employment. Both of which are international.

Well it’s also super hard transitioning from school to the workforce in the middle of a pandemic and being fully remote. New hires don’t have the ability to turn to their side and ask questions anymore, which is extremely important for growth.
It's been pretty hard for us to ramp up our newest hire (who is a talented dev in general). We're considering moving them away from our proprietary tech until we can get back into the office.
Would agree that the normal period of ramp up to adding value to team/company feels like it’s taking longer than usual. Some new hires in other departments definitely seem to be more on the slacking off side (regularly signing off for the day multiple times a week for headaches or not sleeping well 🙄).
I do feel a large part of that is not being in person to learn from others - working at home they have no reference for how hard others are working/urgency of deadlines and much less exposure to cross team resources throughout the company. Many people learn from watching and mimicking how others handle situations in person and they have no access to that.
I would give them benefit of doubt and perhaps go out of your way to offer yourself up as a resource to them for the time being. I message my new design hire every time we’re in a meeting to start a channel of communication for her to feel comfortable asking questions or to offer some context on meeting/subject matter.
