Anyone have experience working at IRS office of chief counsel? Thinking of trying to move there from big law (yes I know it is a large pay cut) but wary that one could get pigeonholed into working in a very narrow area. I’d be applying to a large business/int’l position.

I hear it is essentially a retirement home for tax lawyers. Opposite end of the pay vs work life balance spectrum from biglaw. Sounds like you are ok with that.

I just transferred to private sector from chief counsel, feel free to DM.

I've been at LBI for several years. Work at LBI is essentially tax controversy, which some might consider getting "pigeonholed." Advising the IRS in audits of corporations/partnerships and doing tax court litigation. Dm if you would like more info.

Seconded. Is internal bureaucracy crazy? What’s the hiring timeline? Can you move around between departments?

like

Outside of DC you would most likely be in a litigating department- sbse or lbi. I have seen colleagues move between departments and there are also detail opportunities lasting 1-2 years to try out a different department without having to transfer. Moving to a different city while staying in the same department is pretty easy.
