It takes people with 2-6 years of management consulting experience about 4-6 months to get up to speed on our version of it, especially if they were at a place with a lower price point (~3x price of Big 4 team is typical when we respond to same RFPs).
No consulting experience is a tough transition for Associate and above. You will (based on having seen dozens of such cases) probably have poise and knowledge well beyond a 22yo, but will still be almost as low leverage as a first year consultant to a typical project, for 50 reasons. My personal opinion is that the best way to do it—and you should ask if this can be your likely path before accepting—is to join at ASC, get staffed as an extra SC on a project with a strong SC to shadow them for 1-2 months, then shadow a ASC on another project for 2-3 months, and then try out being staffed into a independent role. You will have to learn in a few months the consulting craft and team rhythms and comfort with a large amount of unpredictability that homegrown ASCs learned over 3+ years. Trying to learn consulting to clients (in our hyper collaborative non-typically-hierarchical temporary teams where no one has a boss or has ever had a boss) and trying to actually deliver consulting work as a key engine is just too hard, and it causes disappointment all around 80% of the time we let someone coming in from a corporate environment try it.
Unlikely for ASC to drive a team of 8, more a EM
Yes, I joined as an associate experienced hire (EH) with similar YOE. Coming from a non-consulting background definitely impacts the learning curve. OW is working on improving the experience for EHs including trainings etc. I think it’s very doable but is an adjustment and requires humility, patience and initiative.
No, there’s an apprenticeship model for the first bit until you gain the skills needed etc. There’s not a set amount of time that you apprentice for, it really depends on ramp up and pipeline.
