Say you were on a mission trip to Africa helping poor children
I don’t have a legitimate reason beyond I simply just wanted the time off after being burnt out in previous role but I haven’t been upskilling either. Just chilling for the most part, so worried that I’ll be perceived as a red flag.

No but a good answer is “after taking X position, I realized my background and experiences didn’t match the progress I decided to move into, because of this I relocated myself to where a position that reflected more of an aligned approach”… or something like that !
4 month gap isn’t bad. Time for reflection, etc

I had 8 month gap, no one ever questioned it
Just give the years you worked at positions on your resume. There's no need to add the month.
Call it a sabbatical.
But if you were actually in the pokey it will show up on the background check…
Just say you left to pursue new opportunities and wanted to make sure the next one was the right fit for you, so you took your time to do that.
