I feel you on this 😭 I don’t have an answer to what changing industries is like, but I can share my experience with going freelance (in case it helps to hear from someone who hit a point of total burnout).
I quit my full-time job a few months ago and jumped into my first freelance gig a week later. I thought taking a week off was long enough to recover from burnout… boy was I wrong. That contract happened to require A LOT of hours, and I was even more burnt out by the end of that gig.
I decided to take a real break to totally reconsider my career and wtf I’m doing with my life. It’s been almost 3 months since then. I haven’t had a major revelation of what my true calling is, but I finally feel rested and ready to work again. I’m so grateful (and lucky and privileged) to have had the time to recover, reflect, and learn how to cope with stress + anxiety more effectively.
For now, I’m planning on staying in advertising as a freelancer so I can take breaks to explore other passions and give my brain a rest. I don’t want to slam the door shut on advertising just yet - while I think it would be super sick to become a tattoo artist, investigative journalist or film director, changing careers would force me to sacrifice a lot of things that are important to me. My curiosities/interests haven’t turned into a burning passion that’s strong enough for me to leave my advertising comfort zone (yet). Either way, I appreciate having the mental energy/time to dabble in things that matter to me outside of advertising.
ALL THAT IS TO SAY, freelancing has been financially spooky. It’s taking longer to find my next gig than I would like. I may have to return to full-time eventually, but even if my “passions” never get monetized at least I’m learning to build them back into my life.
If you’ve gotten this far, thank you for reading what probably should have been an entry in my personal journal or a rant to my therapist 🙏 writing this has helped me process a lot, and I hope my ramblings can provide some solidarity!
Is there a way for you to pace yourself? For e.g., switch to freelance, work 9 months a year, travel/rest/recuperate the remaining 3 months?
I’m not good enough at anything else to support my lavish lifestyle.
Try freelancing for a bit so you have time to relax in between projects.
The exact same thing !
If you’re feeling to exhausted then maybe you need a vacation not a different job.
