Thought this was interesting. Across 160 teams of researchers, just about all failed to make good life outcome predictions on things like GPA, evictions, layoffs, and others. Data followed 4.5k families across 15 years, with 13k features (varied over time). Haven't looked at it directly yet, but will be turning the docs and data inside out... In the meantime, authors claim this as showing the limits of ML. Oh, and it's published in PNAS, so you know there's some big publication energy there.

I’m in the UChicago MS Analytics program and like it a lot. The program has immersion weekends to network multiple times a year. I do it part-time online, 2 classes per quarter, 6 quarters total (1.5 years). Definitely check it out!
Oh wow! I am almost ready to submit my application for part time MS analytics in Chicago. I have been looking at the part time in-person program but having to go to class every weekend for the next 18 months seems like a commitment. Also the fee is too high(~63k). Let me take a look at the online program as well.
I completed GT OMSA. Imo, probably the best bang for your buck - you can also attend the lectures / networking sessions in person if you’re in Atlanta as well, although I was right during Covid
Agreed! I haven’t done the program personally but have heard great things about it from colleagues that have!
Masters useless. Learn SQL, transition to data.
If Masters is truly your dream, do a masters in a field that a simple online course is not what you need. Something in the arts maybe
I’m in UPenn’s MCIT Online program - definitely more comp sci oriented but I’m finding that the CS foundations are helping me as a data scientist. The core CS courses can be a drag but I’m starting to move onto the DS electives and am really excited to learn more. In terms of balancing work and school, it can be tough for some of the harder classes but many people go through the program by doing one a semester. Happy to chat more if you want to DM me
Thankyou! I will take a look at the program. :)
If that specific degree is your goal, Western Governors University's competency-based degree is faster and far cheaper than other options. Test-out of what you already know, then focus on what you need to learn.
The biggest drawback to WGU is the lack of people networking. Your LinkedIn connections wont grow much because the bulk of the work is asynchronous and solitary. You can counter that with purposeful outreach.
Do not expect any Masters degree to set you up for permanent improvement. The knowledge half-life in this field is short—less than two years at least. No formal degree syllabi can keep up with that pace of change. You need communities, podcasts, and other living sources of professional knowledge to ride this river of change.
The degree is helpful in the near-term (< four years) after which your projects and accomplishments weight far more.
I agree with this last post.
Can I ask what your motivation is? As a consultant with 10yoe, what value add does the MS provide? A post grad degree is a lot of work for what looks like will be little reward in your case. Help me understand.
I got my masters online a few years back from St Joseph’s in business intelligence and analytics. I think so many skills are available to learn via bootcamps and online courses now, but I was having a hard time transitioning at my last company. The degree helped my exit opps. I think they have some hybrid programs
