Rising Star
Honestly, its more about time & place than effort. If you get tagged to a few high visibility accounts / initiatives or get a chance to work with the right people you have a chance of moving slightly faster.
Delivery is pretty consistent across the board because the work is pretty commoditised.
The difference really starts occurring at M+ where you can directly influence the $ you bring in and/or leverage the SME you have developed to push for quicker promos.
No, there really isn’t any “much faster.” You may move a cycle (6 months) ahead of average, but there aren’t cases where you only spend 6 months or a year at a level because you’re a rockstar (outside of external hires with different circumstances- and even then it will only be at that particular level, not multiple fast promotions)
i went from associate to senior after 1.5 years. i know a few people who have also done the same. lots of long hours, getting on the good side of people who will represent you at yearly reviews, and when we were in office, i went to happy hours solely to get my name and face out there. now i do a lot for HR with college recruiting, internal training workshops, etc
At ZS, the most extreme possible case for someone hired directly out of undergrad would be:
-A->AC = 2 years
-AC->C = 1.5 years
-C->M = 1.5 years
-M->AP = 3 years
-AP->P = 2 years
That said, I don’t know of anyone who has done this despite a number having been in the fastest track for one level.
More commonly, you’ll see some people hitting the 1.5yr and then follow it by a 2yr or 2.5yr for the following promotion.
So the net is that the most extreme I’ve seen or been aware of is someone hitting through M 6mo faster than the 2 year average per level.
No, I have not because that data wasn’t provided. But the same exists at the A level - i.e., I know of a few in that group, all of them had either experience or an advanced degree.
Meanwhile, I DO know of 2 C->M in 1.5 that were homegrown.
I’ve been at 3 or 4 for all levels personally, and am admittedly overly-obsessed with comparison so am pretty darn familiar with any and all early promotes over the past 5-7 years.
