Anyone using readers workshop units of study? How do you support classrooms?

What do you do when you need a sub? What kinds of plans work best for subs in the Spanish classroom? I have needed subs lately and have found it hard to plan lessons that aren’t just busy work.

I have high school children of my own, but disciplining high schoolers has always intimidated me for some reason. I have excellent classroom management, but I feel like high schoolers are a little smarter ab getting around rules and less worried about consequences.

My 4th grade class didn’t show up today because the teachers are upset that student behaviors that are an issue in music are carrying over to their classroom. I understand their frustration, but nothing was communicated with me. I even thought things were going better this week.

How do you engage your students in more reading outside of what is required in the classroom? With each passing year I am finding an ever shrinking population of students, including honors students, who actually read beyond what is posted in social media or video games. Students willingly volunteer that they do not read and most parents see it as a non-issue. I tell my students that the best readers are usually the best writers. What are some strategies that you use beyond reading logs ?

Split classes take away joy! We have 6-7 classes at each grade level and they split 1-2 into the remaining 5 so we can have a 5 day schedule. Big classes plus the classroom culture homeroom teachers work so hard to achieve are ruined. Advice? (Plus we are told to "not be negative" by admin.)

I am not sure who needs to hear this but exactly one year ago, I was at my lowest point in life. Today, I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. Life has truly been a rollercoaster these past few years for me.

I am sharing this to tell you that no matter what you’re feeling right now, it won’t last. Even the happiness I feel right now, I’ve had that stripped from me multiple times. That is LIFE. We have the good and the bad.

I have a friend who was let go a few months into his first job after college (reason: the manager felt like he wasn't grasping the training content to the level that was expected). We have a large unused professional library that includes a variety of authors, topics, and lots of the scholastic teaching resource books. Most are more than 5 years old, some much older. Some multiple copies of titles that were book studies over the years. No one is using these books and we need the space. I hate to just dump them in a trash bin. After setting them out for people to pick through at school, what can be done with these materials?

What broad computer-based assessments does your school use? We used STAR testing, but we switched to iReady. I can't stand iReady. It's such a long test, which means kids rush. Any alternatives?

I am looking for ideas for a high school intervention class with students reading at PP-4th. I am a brand new teacher and have never taught intervention but we are extremely short staffed. I inherited the class mid-last semester and the former teacher had no framework whatsoever. I am currently one of two reading teachers at the high school I work in and three in the district, which consists of two high schools.
