Anyone who has worked at both a big 4 and a smaller PA (GT, BDO, RSM, PM, etc) could share ur comparison of the 2? Hrs (BusySeas&other time), travel%, pay, pto, benefits, work environment, etc. Thanks!

Currently I’m working in a smaller PA, thinking if it’s worth it for me to explore big 4. Really want to hear opinions from people who have experienced both (Please kindly share your service line and position level when responding, thank you!)

Left big 4 for a smaller PA three years ago, make 40% more now than did then. PTO is similar, work environment much better, but work is also much more challenging.

like

This comparison will greatly depend on office, pay, and different factors. EY has been a much better experience in every way than the smaller PA was for me.

like

Same!

Left a regional for PWC. Lateral move and close to 40% increase in comp. Busier at big 4 but the quality of clients and issues you are exposed to will benefit your career both short and long term. In SALT, no impact in travel, benefits(401k, wealth builder, real time recognition, cell phone, student loan pay down, and other perks blow the regional away). Senior associate.

I went national to regional and hours and pay were about the same. But i have to say I learned SO much more at the national firm. Just way better clients (some regional firm clients are outright horriffic and no larger firm would touch them), more complexity, more expertise in the office. Also a much more structured career path and consistency in your role between teams. I'm leaving for a private manager level job shortly tho, thankfully.

like

Work is more challenging at smaller firms because the clients are not as sophisticated. Hours are pretty much the same. Culture depends on the firm.

I went from smaller firm to EY. Hours at EY are comparable (definitely not more) and I was one of the people who worked the most in my office. I get to see a lot more that I never saw at the smaller firm. Culture at smaller firm was toxic and EY is pretty standard PA culture except my partners are excellent. I love the flexibility at EY; the smaller firm claimed to be flexible but needed approval for everything (including weekly medical appointments). I feel like I’m treated with respect and like an adult at EY; at the smaller firm, I felt like the rules were much more stringent and FTO approval was frustrating - I got called out for taking too much vacation when I was taking less vacation than when we were on PTO, and my utilization was consistently top 3.

I will say I think smaller firms have a wider salary band at least at the associate/senior level, and their high performers are paid way more with overall much better raise %, which can really add up.

I’m trying to pivot to PM after >3 years in finance and I have a 2nd round interview with CPO this week. Company has 3.7 on Glassdoor with complaints about CEO, “bro-y” culture, and hard to wfh. It’s a data analytics company with 5 PMs, was bought by a PE firm this year, and has a new (female) CEO as of Oct. Role is 50/50 hybrid, pays well vs what I make, and most importantly would be a foot in the door to PM. Is this a good place to be for PM? What else do I need to find out to know for sure?
