Are firm offices in LA closed due to COVID? Or are associates able to voluntarily go in?

LA Biglaw associate here. It’s basically a don’t come in unless you absolutely have to. Some boomer partners go in semi regularly but the few times I went in (maybe 5 times since WFH) it’s a ghost town and maybe 6-7 total people (attorneys and staff) were there at any given time that I went.

like

Yeah I’m in biglaw in CC and we need to email the admin director and request a time to go into the office for a specific reason - e.g. accessing hard copy files or working on a manual filing that cannot be done remote. They are pretty clear that they do not want anyone in the office for any reason but will make an exception if you have a good reason.

like

Same.

like

Right now they should be closed as non-essential businesses per the restrictions.

like

This. Larger firms are closed but likely let people come into the office if they want. Smaller firms with bad management have declared themselves essential (they aren’t) and exposing their employees to COVID. I know of at least two firms where people have gotten COVID and the offices STILL didn’t close.

like

They remind us that we’re technically essential, but then expressing tell us not to go in unless absolutely necessary. We have two of our support staff in office to handle what has to be handled there, and some partners go in semi-regularly, but most people are WFH since March. I’ve been back maybe 3 times, twice to pick something up and once because I had something that required me to deal with physical docs.

Quick update LA County covid update

Cumulatively, out of the more than 4.8 million L.A. County residents who have been fully vaccinated, 6,520 — about .13% — have tested positive

287 people, roughly .006%, later had to be hospitalized for COVID-19; and 30 people, .0006%, eventually died

I work for a Fortune 500 company, publicly traded. It has no maternity leave, 6 holidays. No sick days (must use PTO). Total of 15 PTO. No summer hours. Is this the worst benefit you see out there? (I also want to add that we are required to go back to the office now even with Covid number increasing)

Has coronavirus affected your upward mobility? Or rather, make it harder to get promoted?

I started dating this guy some months before covid struck.. he was literally crazy about me. He even stayed in Hyderabad for months just so that we could meet once before he went on to stay with his family. After that it had been a real roller coaster. He pampered me a lot before and now he hardly talks. We both have switched to different companies (earlier were in the same) and now he works 6 days a week. Sleeps or Vists his relatives or works on Sundays. Sometimes I feel he no longer loves me.

I'm in the last stage of the screening process for an Amazon AWS security engineer position. Due to the recent hiring freeze, I was given two options: - go through the last screening (5x1 hour interviews) and, if accepted, wait for a position to open. If not accepted I have to wait 1 to 2 years to apply again, as usual. - OR don't go through the screening and having to go through another screening process. Advices on what to do are welcome. Right now I'm more prone to go through the interview.

Creating in-house vs side hustle:

After years working in a particular vertical, I’ve developed a framework that allows me to quickly research, size, prioritize and produce inputs for organic growth. It’s different from anything I’ve directly on/done while working at any company, and I’m tempted to build an MVP with a freelancer but scared of my employer finding out, expecting me to building it in-house (taking ownership) /file any type of (legal) complaint against me. Additional Posts in Los Angeles Big Law

I never thought I’d say this, but I kinda miss the networking events and stuff. I used to just show up to those to be a good “firm citizen,” but I’d really love to see another lawyer in person instead of through a Zoom call. If I ran into one of my old classmates from law school, I’d probably hug them right now.

Anyone have any suggestions how to break into in house counsel from Big Law?
