Totally dependent on the project, unfortunately. But, several of the SCs I know are supervising work streams with 2-10 people. That said, I know a few SCs who do not lead or manage anyone outside themselves.
Rising Star
Typically work stream lead, managing a team of 2-3. Could be a technical lead. Starts at 5 YoE.
Chief
I’ve only been here about 1.5 years, but from what I’ve seen SC’s are expected to act as M’s in training. I’ve also seen situations where SC’s were pencil pushers like the C’s. It really depends more on how the SC acts. If they’re a hard charger, the former will apply. If they’re not, the latter.
Just finished my first year as SC and led a team of over 10 people - but have heard it is not the norm.
I have been a workstreams lead on a workstream with only myself on a small project, I have been a workstream lead of a team of 5 on a larger project.
Promoted to Manager and have anywhere between 1-6 people more junior folks working with me depending on project and initiative
