I was thinking about lateraling to Orrick before and reached out to a friend who was bragging about 2400 hours. F that noise
No. They have /plenty/ of work; hours are the same.
If you’re halfway decent at the job, you’ll be just as busy at one of those shops as you would at a V10
yeah probably cuz they don’t have as much work
Coach
Agreed. They have just as much work except with clients that aren’t paying the exorbitant rates as V10s. In many instances, they still do sophisticated work with PE clients. For instance, one of the private equity shop at my V10 always goes to these firms for their add-ons that are below, say, $200m. And why wouldn’t they? lol
I was happier at one of those than my V10 as you get a bit more wiggle room/slightly more ability to push back, but the hours are not guaranteed to be substantially lower

Is Orrick a smaller firm? I know Fenwick is

Orrick's 2 largest offices are NY and DC

EC/VC partner at a top shop here. You will work heavy hours if you are good and at a place with a decent amount of work. It’s just that your clients are generally less demanding so you have greater freedom in how you allocated your schedule even if the volume is similar. A “drop everything on a Friday evening, supposedly dead deal needs to sign on Monday” M&A cadence doesn’t happen a lot but you do have weekend work if that makes sense. Happy to chat if helpful.

relatedly any chance of their doing ap twice a year starting this december?
Ap?
What about mofo?
Mofo just isn’t a tech firm. While Cooley, WSGR, and GD built their firms on the back of Silicon Valley and venture capital, Mofo was and is the go to for more traditional companies in the bay.
Perhaps worth noting that Orrick cut salaries during Covid (though later made associates whole). Also I want to say Fenwick has had some sketchy hiring practices during Covid.
