Bottom Line: Pension plans are administrative nightmares and long-term financial burdens. Many employers don’t want that responsibility.
I completely understand that people want the security net of a pension…but they are dying out. And with job hopping being so common these days, it is a benefit that rarely becomes reality for today’s workforce because they don’t reach the vesting target before leaving.
To me, I see better value in early investing in 401k and IRA to prepare for retirement. Banking on an employer for a pension is risky.
I think most of the jobs that still have pensions are government jobs and a few unions. My mother was a public school teacher and had a pension.
