I'm +55 & age discrimination is very real.
I tested my hypothesis by applying with my full resume, and then I applied with my resume shortened and dropped the years when I graduated from college and grad school.
Recruiting and interest went from 5% (1 in 20) to 33% and counting. When looking at prospective employers, I, too, always look at the management team. If there isn't one person that looks at least 40, I don't bother.
Unless they’re in government 🤣
It happens within companies too when you’ve just stayed there. Not just at hiring. A few years ago I was told one of my employees who was late 40s couldn’t be a manager because she was too old to learn to manage teams well and needed to ride out her career at the senior staff level. You better believe I fought for her and she has now has the title and a team of 5-15 people ever since, where she excels as a supervisor and mentor.
that is what I am trying to do get a sponsor and make moves
Biden but not Trump, apparently.
From a hiring perspective, I would say it is much more difficult to find a job in your mid-50s. I ended up removing a lot of job history and education dates just to get interviews.
I dunno. I think the only time you really run into it is when the HM is considerably younger then you. I looked at some startups that was interested in…and when I looked at their leadership team, not one of them looked over 40…if even late 30’s. And the rest of the company was filled with 20 something’s.
In the UK, I've noticed ageism creep in post 40!! Most people make P by around that age, and so if you are older than them and are not that level, they clearly look down on you and have doubts if you are very capable at all.
Stop saying things like this. It makes you sound old.
I just retired at 65 from IT Consulting with no sign of ageism. I was able to stay trained in hot skills related to Salesforce and had a MBA. My work ethic was appreciated when things got behind. However the market is tightening now.
I managed to ride this consulting racket for 18 years. Never planned to stay with it for so long. It was just so easy. Then finally some scared and angry kids fired me. Hah! I’d been coasting in quiet quit mode for years by then. During Covid years I just wrote one or two emails a day and kept the computer alive in meeting mode while sleeping or playing video games and smoking weed or just outside bicycling or running errands. They pretended to pay, I pretended to work. Fair is fair. Fuck them. Never kissed anyone’s ass. That was probably it in the end. They did not like their profit margins, not my problem. Find someone else who believes in your corporate BS.
So that has nothing to do with age. That’s just a poor fit for you and them.
I’m 52 but I look like I’m 35. 50spf+ sunscreen every day ladies, and you can be whatever age you want to be! But of course you have to start this regime early.
I love this! My sister looks way younger than she is!!!
Depends if you’re a woman or a man. For women, every age is bad, but it gets even worse after 40. For men, it starts to get harder around 50-55.
I see who’s being promoted to my level and I’m astounded. They do the bare minimum to get where I am.
Perhaps silly question, but if you cover your greys and don’t list years on your resume… how do they know we’re over 40?
Maybe when they verify your college education with the graduation year?
But, you can find someone’s age on google.
