I've been told by recruiters that when they first encounter a resume they'll literally skim it for 20 seconds or so and determine whether to hold on to it or send it to the discard pile. That sounds harsh, but it makes sense when you consider that they know what they're looking for. The thing for applicants to keep in mind is that first impressions matter, and if a resume is confusing or overly complicated it likely won't survive that first contact.

Accounting for automated filters, recruiters skimming through, and then people actually reading and asking you about what you wrote in the resume. I think we also need a specialisation in written English.

Initial pass is usually a fast scan for fit signals: skills, recency, role alignment, impact. Deep reading happens once baseline relevance is established. Resume clarity heavily influences whether it gets that second, slower review.
