At a Hyundai car dealership for periodic maintenance. The are charging $100 for tire rotation and multipoint inspection…. What’s y’all’s approach to keeping car ownership cost low as possible? I can think of a few 1) buying Toyota or Honda models with large parts availability/oem alternatives 2) doing some simple things myself like oil change filter change, 3) not going to dealership unless it’s free service

If you are near Discount Tire, go there next time for tires. They rotate monthly for free. $100 for a multi point inspection sounds like a good price. I paid more than that at a place known for fair prices. I also have a Hyundai and avoid the dealer to avoid upselling, but maybe I will go there next time since they cost less.

Own older model domestic cars. Less fancy stuff to break and less cost to fix.

We have a 2004 F-250 and 2012 Escape. Both paid for and maintenance/repair cost is minimal.

Cars without fuel injection and ecu would be “analog”… I don’t have enough courage to own and maintain those… also, I imagine in any kind of moderate collisions, my knees would be the crumple zone… too scary

Buy older used cars, find models known for reasonable maintenance costs, and keep them until they really break down. That reduces the cost a lot compared to a typical buy-new-and-trade-in strategy.

100 dollars seems a lot to rotate tires. Its really easy to do it yourself.

My car costs are a lot higher than the normal person so im used to minimizing them. Learning to do the basics will save you a ton of money. Dealers will charge me $350 to change my oil but I can do it myself for $80 (after buying $100 of tools). Just watch some youtube videos

Tracking a car is definitely not in my fire strategy. Can I ask how much your car expenses are annually? And awesome that you can afford a fun hobby like this

Buy a Tesla, tell everyone you are doing it because it’s cheap not because of political reasons, own a Tesla sedan and it’s a year old. I now pay roughly 1/5th the total operating costs of what I did for my Infiniti sedan, and it’s cleaner for the environment. Air quality is often a problem where I live and I feel better about my personal environmental impact driving electric. I also generally keep cars about 5-6 years and sell them, get max value that way but I don’t end up compromising on technology or safety changes. Tesla comes to you for maintenance, literally drive to your home/driveway/parking lot and complete maintenance where you are located. In a year I’ve only had maintenance done once, which was about $150.

Do your basics like oil changes yourself once you have exhausted the free ones that came with the purchase of the vehicle. Rotating tires is easy, but a pain if you don't have equipment like jackstands at home. Any local mechanic can do tire rotation and oil change cheaply.

Tire rotation and balance is free at discount tire.

Generally curious how many companies offer phone reimbursement? My last gig did not but the current one does. Legally it seems, all employers are required to do so if we use our phone in literally any capacity (video call, slack, teams, emails etc). How prevalent is the issue of not reimbursing phone dues?
