At what point did you feel like you were a “good lawyer”?
I’m a couple of years out of law school and recently started to feel like I had found my footing. However, I had an MSJ that I was initially pretty proud of completely torn apart today, and it has me feeling pretty discouraged.
Has anyone else been told they weren’t the strongest writer as a junior attorney and completely turned that around? What did you do to improve?

I’m a 4th year and I had this experience recently. I’ve been working on my writing and while other products have improved, my first MSJ last month was horrifying.

I wouldn’t worry about it. I’m sure it was fine and you’ll get to that level once you do enough of them.

To be honest I always feel incredibly critical of my own work...and yes sure are there briefs I read that make me think wow that person is in a whole different level....but then I read plenty that make me realize I'm sitting pretty nice on the bell curve with my writing abilities.

3rd year by the way.

Who did the tearing apart?

Senior associate

I started feeling like a good lawyer when clients came back to me for my opinions on new matters

What is considered a “large” caseload in employment litigation? I work at a large L&E boutique law firm and handling about 14-15 active litigation cases in state/federal court or arbitration. Some of these matters are multi-plaintiff and multi-defendant cases, but none are class actions. This does not include any matters I am handling in the charge stage or in pre-litigation. Not sure if that’s a typical caseload or not?

Recently received an offer from Ogletree to do only class action work. It'll be a big change for me, I'll be starting as a fourth year. Double my current salary, etc.

What will this be like? It's more of a niche, but lucrative, part of their practice, right? Will I really get good WLB like they claim? I have a nice 40 hour a week job right now, no billables.
